“Jesus, Christina! It’s been a month! Why are you still asking me about this?” Despite his exasperation, he smiled when Clark handed him a cold beer from the ice chest.

“Because I’m looking at the photos we just got back, and y’all look like you’re running fevers or something. Did you see your face? And don’t get me started on those stupid grins y’all had the whole night.”

“We were just jubilant, obviously. My baby sister was married. Why shouldn’t we be thrilled?” Marshall leaned back in his deck chair, admiring Clark without his shirt on.

The grey-haired man popped his own beer open and Marshall watched his Adam’s apple bob around the cold drink. He stood shirtless, jeans that actually fit him accentuating the hint of hair under his belly button, sweat shining across his skin. While Marshall was on the phone, Clark continued his work on the stack of kennels they were building against the side of the house, each a comfortably sized den with a door made of chicken wire to keep predators out. Since the day Clark told Jared that he worked in wildlife conservation, they’d been talking about pursuing it for real. The kennels would house animals picked up by wildlife rescue groups across the state who needed foster parents to help rehabilitate for release.

“If you won’t admit to getting boned in the bathroom at my wedding, will you at least tell me if y’all are official yet?”

“Hey Clark!” Marshall could feel the smile on his face as the other man turned to look at him, power drill in one hand, the other holding up the hinged door—looking like a centerfold in some erotic carpenter’s magazine. “Are we official?”

Clark made a show of considering the question, and while he did, Marshall poured a bit of his beer into a bowl that Marvin had carried over in his awkward raccoon hands.

“Tell her we have no idea what she’s talking about.” Clark winked at him as he turned back to screw the door onto the kennel.

“Clark says he doesn’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You are seriously getting on my nerves, Marshall.” Despite her words, the smile was apparent in her voice. “You better let me come over and see any baby animals you guys get, okay?”

“Yeah, of course.”

There was a pause on the other line, then Chrissy’s voice was softer. “Are you happy, Marsh?”

Marshall smiled even wider when Clark dropped the power drill on top of the kennels and raised both hands in triumph. As he turned and grinned at the human who saved him and who loved him, Marshall said:

“Yeah.”
